Cramp Brothers' coach-building firm has deep roots dating back to 1892 when it was founded in Hobart by WT and RJ Cramp. Through the challenges of the Great Depression, our business not only survived but thrived, steadily growing. As the automotive landscape evolved and cars became increasingly common, we adapted our coach-building expertise to craft custom vehicles, tailor them to owners' preferences, and construct bodies and seats for imported engines and chassis.
In addition to our automotive work, Cramps expanded our craftsmanship to include the creation of buses, fire engines, and even horse-drawn milk and bakers' carts, a testament to our versatility and commitment to meeting the unique needs of our community. In the 1940s, WT Cramp's four sons, who had inherited the business, made the difficult decision to sell it.
Entering the mid-twentieth century, as the number of cars on the roads grew, so did the demand for our expertise. We increasingly specialized in auto bodywork, dedicating ourselves to restoring vehicles to their original glory.
In 1991, Brian and Petrina White took over the business, marking a new chapter in our storied history. Since then, Cramp Bros Bodyworks has remained in the White family, upholding the tradition of excellence that has defined us for over a century. While the world has seen many changes since our inception, two things have remained constant: our business still operates from its original location, a testament to our enduring presence in Hobart, and we continue to uphold WT Cramp's timeless motto: 'Work up to a standard, not down to a price'.
